Research Pecha Kucha on theme of P1
Early in his novel
Bryce Courtney articulates the personal nature of what we come to know as ‘the
power of one.’ “In each of us there burns a flame of independence that must
never be allowed to go out… as long as it exists within us we cannot be
destroyed.” (p.21)
Later he broadens the
notion of ‘the power of one’ to encompass more than the merely personal,
encompassing the larger, reciprocal impact it can have. He seems to suggest
that people rely upon one another, particularly in difficult times, to ignite,
foster and fan the flame of ‘the power of one’. “Inside all people there is
love, also the need to take care of the other man who is his brother… When a
man is brutalized… always he is looking for small signs. The smallest sign is
that someone is worried for him is like a fire on the dark mountain. When a man
knows somebody cares he keeps some small places, a corner maybe of his soul,
clean and lit.” (p.236)
For example, both
Peekay and Nelson Mandela seem to possess almost mythical significance for
those around them. Despite the considerable challenges created by their
circumstances, each seem to have fostered the ‘power of one’ both personally
and publicly. By exploiting their personal potential for the betterment of
others, each seem to reach ‘greatness’.
Project: You will
produce a Pecha Kucha demonstrating the
broader notion of ‘the power of one’ as it exists in a current example (2014-
now) You may choose any subject which interests/inspires you and which
exemplifies this idea.

Due dates: The
presentations will take a little more than 2 classes. I’ll draw names for the
order. The presentation days will be May 30/31, June 1/2, (June 3/6)

Tips:
1.
Choose a topic that you can speak
passionately about.

Use note cards to organize your speech
3.
Choose relevant images – remember to source them
if not your own

4. Practice and refine your talk
