"The Other" unit overview and link to next reading

Hello 12s,

In additon to The Suitcase Lady  and The Danger of a Single story, we will read a variety of works that share a common notion. The next work we will look at is:
Identities by Valgardson

Thematic Notions to watch for:

·      Isolation

·      Foreign/er/ness

·      Alien

Over the course of the next several classes, we will read (have been reading)  a series of works wherein we will take note of/explore the above concepts.

Consider:  

·      What does this notion mean?

·      What creates/fosters this phenomenon?

·      How does it affect individuals, communities, the planet

·      Note: psychological, emotional, behavioural, political, economic, environmental ramifications

·      What do the examples we are reading/experiencing all have in common?

November 18^th you will write an in class paper comparing the thematic connection between two of the works we have read (I’ll tell you which two on the day).

In addition, you’ll identify this/these theme/s in life around you and will bring that which you identify into our discussion. I will share more on this assignment aspect at a later time
